2 Critical Insights for Mastering Your Energy

(And you're already doing more of it than you realize...)

Do you ever wonder why some people feel really good to be around?

Or how some folks dominate a room, even if they are not loud?

Courtesty – Gratisography

It’s kind of strange, right? A puzzle.

I’ve been “reading the world through Energy” for more than a decade now. Heck, I was probably doing it before that, but hadn’t yet figured out how to make sense of it all.

What I’ve found is that it’s really easy to understand that puzzle, once you learn to see the patterns.

More importantly, when we learn the basics of Energy, we finally begin to master ourselves.*

What is Energy?

When I say “energy” I don’t mean how long you can run on a treadmill, or whether you’re falling asleep at your desk. Nor am I talking about the Einstein version of E=MC2.

I’m talking about Energy in terms of the vibration we put out.

The 2 Critical Insights you Must Know to Master your Energy

There are two major types of Energy: anabolic and catabolic.**

  1. Anabolic Energy: Feels good. It is expansive, forgiving, understanding, compassionate, open, loving, grateful. It feeds itself. It’s quite a bit like endorphines, in that it makes you feel good and replenishes your system. The more powerfully it is transmitted, the more good it does.
  2. Catabolic Energy: Doesn’t feel good. In fact, it often feels bad. It encompasses such things as stress, anger, blame, resentment, criticism, ridicule, and judgement. It’s like adrenaline in that it leaves you drained. The more powerfully it is transmitted, the more harm it does.

How to Use These New Insights

You are now a budding-Energy-Jedi! I’m excited for you, because this is just the first step in massively shifting your life.

Once you begin to see the world through these simple, yet profound, new lenses, a whole lot of information becomes available to you.

You begin to make different choices.

Stop for a moment: Who in your life is super-anabolic? Who is super-catabolic?

How do you feel around each of those people. How would your life change if you could change the amount of time your spend with each of them?

And even more importantly, how do you want to be in the world.

Stop for a moment: What is your Energy right now? Catabolic or Anabolic? What was it 5 minutes ago? How about 5 hours ago?

Because here’s the thing: those people that I asked about at the very beginning of this post – they are putting out a whole lotta anabolic energy. This means that not only do they go through their days feeling more “up” than most, but they also pass that gift along to others.

Personally, I can’t think of a better way to be.

So, as you head back out into the world, after reading this, remember that you can be either anabolic or catabolic in your thinking, actions, responses, interpretations, and behaviors. And you can choose to surround yourself with people who are either anabolic or catabolic…AND your responses to them can be either anabolic or catabolic. Which do you choose?

It really is that simple. And it really is up to you, no matter what is going on in the world around you.

Best, Julianna

((* This is the first in a series of posts I’ll be writing along these lines. If you’d like to expand your insights on the topic, take a look at Power vs. Force, by the late David Hawkins – it’s a hands-down favorite. ((**I learned the terms anabolic and catabolic during my Coaching Certification program with the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. The founder, Bruce Schneider, coined the terms as they relate to the different types of energy noted above, and taught me a great deal about understanding our thoughts/lives/experiences from an energetic perspective. I am forever grateful for what these teachings have brought into my life, and into the lives of all my clients. On a side note, I have found the terms anabolic and catabolic overlay nicely with the energy classification system David Hawkin’s put forth in “Power vs Force” (see above) and I’m really excited to write about Dr. Hawkins’ classification system as well. Stay tuned!))

  1. This is really interesting and you put it in simple enough terms for me, a complete novice, to get the hang of. I will remember these terms, anabolic is positive and what I want more of and catabolic smacks of catastrophe and I don’t want that it my life! There I have learned my first lesson. Thanks for sharing.

    • I’m so glad to hear this Corinne – thank you for taking the time to leave your note. Let us know how it goes – what have you started identifying as anabolic and what as catabolic. Enjoy, and keep at it. You’ll be amazed at the changes that occur simply through practicing this awareness!

  2. In my understanding catabolysm is expanding, pushing etc – the things we do to create the conditions for growth. It is the yang.
While anabolism is the opposite. It is the time we rest, absorb, rejuvenate – this is the time we actually grow. It is the yin.
These two forces are co-dependent of eachother and need to be kept at a balance. Too much catabolysm will lead to burnout while too much anabolism creates stagnation.

    • This is a neat observation, Siim. Are you an iPEC student. I’m asking because I wonder if we are both interpreting Bruce Schneider’s framework differently, or if you’re making a separate observation, outside of his framework. I agree with you fully about the balancing of energies, in the way you defined them in your comment.
